Ay, ellos estaban serios cuando dijeron que es el invierno. ¡Qué frio! Ayer, yo había querido explorar la ciudad un poco, pero con las temperaturas heladas y la lluvia, tomamos refugio en unos cafés. No se preocupe, hay muchos Starbucks acá (pronunciados “eh-starbooks”). No obstante, hay dos cosas muy buenas sobre días lluviosos:
1. Una tradición interesante y deliciosa de Chile es que cuando llueve, los chilenos hacen sopaipillas. ¿Qué bueno, no? Anoche, comí mi primera sopaipilla pasada con salsa de chancaca. Dios mío, que rico. No tiene nada que ver con la lluvia, pero también comí porotos granado, una comida muy chilena.
2. Es una lástima que ayer estaba nublado y lluvioso, pero el día después de la lluvia siempre es maravilloso. La lluvia limpia el aire así que puedes respirar aire limpia, sin smog. Esta mañana, abrí mi cortina para una vista increíble de la cordillera. Yo estaba esperando un día así.
My, they were serious when they said it is winter. It’s very cold. Yesterday, I wanted to explore the city a bit, but in light of the freezing temperatures and rain, we took refuge in coffee shops instead. Don’t worry there are many Starbucks here. (Note: native Spanish speakers can’t pronounce words that begin with an ‘s’ followed by a consonant. They lack that phoneme in Spanish so words like that are pronounced with an “eh” followed by the ‘s + other consonant’) But, there are two good things about rainy days:
1. An interesting and delicious Chilean tradition is that when it rains, Chileans make sopaipillas. Awesome, right? Last night I ate my first sopaipilla pasada con salsa de chancaca (don’t know what all that means in English) My goodness, how tasty. This doesn’t have anything to do with the rain, but I also ate porotos granado, a very Chilean dish.
2. It’s a shame that yesterday was cloudy and rainy, but the day after the rain is always beautiful. The rain cleans the air so you can breathe smog-less air for a day. This morning, I pulled back the curtain on my window and welcomed an incredible view of the mountains. I was waiting for a day like this.
